Nagina MP Pushes for Expansion of MPs’ Development Fund in Parliament

Nagina MP Chandrashekhar Azad has urged the Finance Minister in the Lok Sabha to raise the MPLADS allocation beyond ₹5 crore, saying the current amount is inadequate for constituency development. The demand gained support from other MPs, with the government indicating it may consider the proposal.

In a pointed intervention in the Lok Sabha, Nagina Member of Parliament Chandrashekhar Azad on Tuesday urged the Union Finance Minister to increase the allocation under the Members of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS), arguing that the current ceiling is insufficient to meet the growing development needs of constituencies.

Raising the issue during parliamentary proceedings in New Delhi, Azad said the existing allocation of ₹5 crore per MP does not allow for comprehensive and meaningful development work at the grassroots level. He emphasized that rising costs and expanding public expectations have significantly reduced the real impact of the fund, making it difficult for lawmakers to address essential infrastructure and welfare requirements in their regions.

Azad’s demand found resonance across party lines, with MPs seated nearby, including Hanuman Beniwal, voicing their support for the proposal. Several members echoed the concern that constituency development has become increasingly challenging under the current financial framework, particularly in underserved and rural areas.

According to parliamentary sources, the Finance Minister has indicated that the government is open to examining the demand and may consider further action after due assessment. While no formal commitment was announced, the assurance has raised expectations among MPs seeking greater financial flexibility to deliver local development projects.

The renewed push to enhance the MPLADS allocation underscores a broader debate within Parliament over decentralised development funding and the capacity of elected representatives to respond effectively to local needs. Any decision on revising the fund could have significant implications for constituency-level development planning across the country.
